2011 - The Year in Review

Yes, just like the Oscars or CNN, I too will have a year in review of the more memorable moments I encountered through the world of modeling. It was an evolutionary year for me I would say. I cut back on the number of shoots and focused on quality rather than quantity, choosing to mature my physical expressions over everything else. I took a look at 2010 and thought, "how can I build upon this momentum leading into 2011." After all, 2010 was quite an exciting one, so I wondered how I would be able to tread differently and still be successful. It helped to take a break from it all in late 2010-early 2011 so I could gain a few more pounds of muscle and basically just take a step back from it all.

My first shoot of 2011 was in the spring, a collaborative shoot with West Phillips from San Francisco. Fresh off his trip to Australia, I had the opportunity to meet him prior to shooting to get a sense of his concepts and objectives. I gathered up several model friends who participated in the TeamDC fundraising event so that he would have a variety of hunks to choose from. There were roughly 8-10 of us modeling in DC's Meridian Park, along with the help of stylists and other assistants. It was a fun time and I had a blast working with everyone.

Kicking off the start of the summer, I went to Boston for Memorial Day and shot with Cory Stierley. First off, the guy is a trip! He's silly and sarcastic, which is my kind of humor. He wanted my body hair to be fully grown out which was the first time I had done so in a shoot but I knew the images would come out great. Below are a couple furry shots from the weekend.

The summer was a sizzling one! In June I was able to reconnect with Miguel Suarez on an edgy B&W fashion series. Perhaps some of my more dynamic and expressive shoots to date, I really wanted to nail this one. From the looks of these, I think I did alright. To view the full set, click here. In addition, we shot again a few weeks later and produced a couple more steamy shots that added some sex appeal to my portfolio. I have my fingers crossed in hopes he'll consider working with me again in 2012.

Midway through the summer I learned that the Goliath known as YMIJ was returning to Maryland! I hadn't worked with him in well over a year, so not only was I nervous but anxious to be working with him again! He dusted off his camera skills while I did my crunches and produced a wildly-artistic series he called Uncanny Rose. Oh, and we shot again shortly after that on an Annie Leibovitz-inspired shot, which happens to be my favorite image of the year! The third shoot together we basically got drunk and had fun playing with magazines, tic-tacs, and empty liquor bottles. Who knew the pictures would actually turn out as good as they did (I sure didn't think they would). We did a couple other tests shots here and there, but these images below were among my favorites!

In the fall, I was able to grab the attention of Sean Gomes. We had been trying to set up a shoot for quite some time but schedules never matched up. I'm finally glad they did because I got some pretty unique shots out of our shoot. He's another photographer I'd like to continue working with in 2012 if he'd be up for it. Here are a few from our collaborative efforts...

The fall would not be complete without a Ripped Genes honorable mention. Although I was up for the coveted cover model spot, I still managed to produce a few stylish images that are keepers in my portfolio. Robert Mercer, the principal photographer and producer of the calendar and release party, went classy with a collection of charming lads in sharp attire. I for one was quite pleased with the new direction and stylish look!

Rounding out my final shoot of the year was a collaboration with Julian Vankim. Stay tuned for clips from a series of concepts we did, debuting in early 2012. Cheers to all my wonderful photographers who added such great depth to my portfolio. Hope to work with you all again in the near future!

2012 Ripped Genes Calendar Outtakes

As a follow-up to my previous post on the 2012 Ripped Genes Calendar, Baltimore-based photographer Robert Mercer Jr. always provides a CD of all the images he shot during the photoshoot to all his models. Fortunately, there were a few that stood out for me that were not used in the actual calendars so I've decided to make a mini-set out of them. From the creative hands of artist Manny Fontanilla (who assisted with post-editing duties), I hope this set conveys a sophisticated confidence in my modeling - something I've been working on a lot this year. I'm quite happy with how these turned out and I hope you do, too!

Photoshoot Preview: Sean Gomes

So I'm going to attempt to not jinx myself by posting a preview of my photoshoot this weekend. Oftentimes when I post previews like this I tend to raise expectations for the photos and when they don't come out as I had hoped, I feel let down. I'm hoping to change that this weekend.

Sean Gomes is a local photographer who I've yet to shoot with, based in Delaware. I've had my eyes on his work for quite some time and the common connections we have in the industry confirms that it's time we collaborate. As you can see from his images here, there's a clean and crisp quality to his style, simple yet beautiful. I hope to contribute in my own Stingel way to his wonderful collection this weekend. Uncanny Rose, by YMIJ

A reunion of epic proportions! Well, at least I like to think so! Sure you have your peanut butter & jelly, Regis & Kelly, heck even lace and leather. But what two commodities go better than YMIJ and Shawn Stingel? Hmm...now THAT'S a fierce combination in and of itself if you ask me!

Okay, well enough with the dramatics...there's certainly a more significant and profound art to showcase here and that's the return of YMIJ to the photography scene once again. After studying and doing research, as well as my own internal reflection, we've reunited on our first series in over a year which takes shape as an editorial story. Maybe that's why it's best described as uncanny, something unusual and out of the ordinary. It's clean, crisp, beautiful...and different. Perhaps one of my more softer and inviting sets, I enjoyed the concept and hope you appreciate the sophisticated approach.

And as an added bonus, I washed away the sophistication about a week later by sexing things up with YMIJ in this Angelina Jolie-inspired retake of a famous Annie Leibovitz bathtub photograph. Just like a DVD with extra footage, Uncanny Rose comes with its very own deleted scene. Perhaps one of my favorite images of the year, this re-imagination demonstrates how important strong facial expressions are and how far I've come since I started modeling.

2012 Ripped Genes Calendar

For the second year in a row I've decided to give it another shot at the Ripped Genes Calendar auditions and was selected for both versions! For 2012, Robert Mercer decided to do two calendars to satisfy everyone's tastes for hunky men, both in underwear and in formal attire. This time around I got the month I asked for - my birthday month, which is May! Although I do not have copies of the image files used in the calendar you can catch a small glimpse in the images below. It was a fun evening at the release party and many of my friends showed up for support! Thanks to Robert for a great event and best of luck for a profitable and successful run in 2012.

Maintenance Man, by Michael Brown

Plumbing is a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it! The fun and flirty message print on the underwear from my most recent photoshoot grabbed the attention of artist extraordinaire Michael Brown, who transformed one of my B&W images into a masterpiece!

Since discovering his work on Facebook, I've always tried to stay on his radar and hoped that one of my images would inspire him to pick up his crafty pen. Shortly after I released my B&W series, Mikey took notice and requested permission to draw the plumber picture. Not only is he exceptionally talented with the pen but maintains the warmest personality and a generous sensibility!

Summer Editorial, by Miguel Suarez

My first feature of 2012! Gracing the pages of WowWow, a London-based website featuring established and emerging artists in stylish photography and modeling, this black & white stylish set by photographer Miguel Suarez found its way to publication!

I must admit, I took some time off from the modeling scene to focus on friends, family, and myself which included a complete overhaul of my fitness regimen. Plus I just wanted a break from it - I was shooting way too often with an uncertain purpose. I was lost. Not taking any credit away from the photographers, but my expressions were flat, my poses were dull and forced, and it didn't seem like I was really enjoying myself in front of the camera.

So after taking hiatus and learning to have fun and focus on other things in my life, I've been able to return to the modeling scene with a fresher mindset and a new outlook on the industry. This new series of images from photographer Miguel Suarez marks a breakthrough for me personally. Not only am I quite proud of them but I pushed myself creatively to achieve a higher standard of what I'm capable of. I hope you enjoy these shots as much as I enjoyed creating them! .

Adam Bouska Photoshoot Campaign

On the eve of returning to Washington DC to spread love with his NOH8 campaign on May 30th, celebrity photographer Adam Bouska announced that he's hosting a photo contest on his Facebook fanpage. The winner will receive a custom photo shoot at his studio in Los Angeles, CA. As you can see from these samples, his work is nothing short of brilliant!

Needless to say, I've long been a fan of Bouska's photography before NOH8 surfaced, so when I read the news on his blog I took advantage of this opportunity by posting "Pinup" on his fanpage. TeamDC Fashion Show & Model Search Recap

What an exciting weekend it was to be in the nation's capital! Members of the DC community and beyond came out in droves to support TeamDC's annual fundraising event (see my previous post here), held March 12, 2011. The struggling economy did not inhibit folks from opening their wallets to help raise money for local GLBT scholarships, as TeamDC raised well over $7,000.

It was an amazing evening, and I was proud to announce that my good friend Micah had taken top honors as the event's winner! His aggressive marketing strategy, tight connections within the DC community, strikingly sexy features (sparkling blue eyes, tattoos, baby face, chiseled body...need I say more?), and recent publications for his modeling work made him the odds-on favorite.

After having commercial success in the 2010 Ripped Genes Calendar, an EthanSays exclusive, a potential photoshoot with notable fashion photographer, Mike Ruiz, and a booking with personal friend and all-time favorite YMIJ, Micah's modeling career is now set to soar! As a personal trainer for the U.S. Military, I'm happy to hand over my crown to him and feel he will represent the interests of TeamDC while fulfilling his reign with confidence!

Photoshoot Preview: West Phillips

It's been quite some time since my last photoshoot, but that's okay because I've taken myself out of modeling for a few months to focus on family, friends, and fitness. This weekend will be quite an exciting one as I will be judging the TeamDC fashion show / model search competition on Saturday! (See my earlier write-up here). I have several friends competing so it'll be a personal challenge as well as a professional one, but I'm looking forward to it and wish them all the best of luck!

Sunday, however, I'll be participating in a photoshoot production that will include San Francisco photographer, West Phillips! It will consist of makeup artists, a talented videographer (MetroWeekly's Aram Vartian), production assistants, and models from the competition. Should be an interesting and fun collaboration of many individuals and I'm thrilled to be part of this.

2011 TeamDC Fashion Show & Model Search

TeamDC's annual fundraising event returns to Town Danceboutique in support of their College Scholarship Program that assists LGBT student-athletes from local surrounding areas of DC, MD, and VA. Once again, TeamDC will host a fashion show/model search consisting of 13 models who will be judged on clubwear/jeans, swimwear, an online voting portion, and an auction round to help raise money for TeamDC's scholarship fund.

In addition to the $500 First Place Prize, the model with the highest score will win a professional photoshoot from Robert Mercer Photography, be on the cover of the May issue of Compete Magazine and have the opportunity to audition for one of the coveted months in the 2012 Ripped Genes Calendar. However, most importantly, the event will help raise money for the College Scholarship Program that the Team DC Board donates to and has done so for four consecutive years.

So why am I promoting this aside from the fact my image is being used? Well, you may recall my own efforts in self-marketing last year, which paid off in dividends as I was crowned the winner in 2010, will be returning to this event as a panel judge, and was named Mr. March 2012 for the current edition of the Ripped Genes Calendar. I'd be foolish not to promote awareness for this charitable cause, least of all the springboard it's given me into various other avenues of modeling in which I've been pursuing. It's going to be a nail-biter, though - these models are smokin' hot!

Reflections of Eros

Eros (or Cupid in Roman myths), the young Greek God of Love, is known in mythology to exemplify sexual love and universal passion. His bold physique and striking features were often admired by deities; legend has it that his radiance was often too inspiring for mortals to bear.

Eros lost his heart to the mortal Psyche but constantly feared for her safety. He made Psyche swear that she would never look fully upon his face, only visiting her at night. Psyche's family insisted that Eros must be a grotesque and dangerous monster.

In retaliation, she lights a lamp and sees his glorious beauty, making her hands tremble and shake feverishly! A few drops of hot oil spilled upon Eros, which caused him to fly away from her in physical pain compounded by the pain of knowing she doubted him. He later recovers and rescues Psyche, the only mortal who stole his heart.

As an homage to the young God Eros, this labor-of-love series as featured on Beautifulmag consists of newly-redesigned images from photographer Robert Mercer, Jr., visionary of the Ripped Genes calendars, and graphic artist Manny Fontanilla! May the spirit of Cupid's arrow fill your hearts this Valentine's Day!

Talking Heads: David Tickner

As 2011 begins to march its way forward, I decided to take a leap across the pond (not literally) and pick the brain of reFRESH Magazine's Editor-in-Chief, David Tickner about magazines, media, growing trends, and what inspires him. I've been fortunate to have worked with great photographers who've put me on his radar for submissions and articles, but I wasn't expecting to develop such a witty and oftentimes humorous friendship. But I'm not the least bit fooled by his sarcasm or playfullness - this gentleman takes journalism seriously and his diligent work ethic shows in the wonderful magazines he publishes, in addition to the fashion-centric, eye-candy found on his blog. Here's what David had to say...

What is your official title and role at reFRESH magazine? What kind of industry experience do you have?
My official title at the magazine is Editor-in-Chief and I’m responsible for the whole magazine’s content, look and feel. I’ve worked as an editor in publishing for nearly 15 years during which time I’ve edited all sorts of titles – ranging from charity publications to business travel. It’s a terrifically rewarding job and one that allows me the luxury of never having the same day twice – there’s always something new going on!!

Tell me a little bit about your magazine and online blog...
Well the magazine is produced as an upmarket ‘coffee table’ style gay lifestyle magazine covering a wider range of subject areas than some other titles. The blog site has evolved over time to sit alongside the magazine and provides us with an opportunity to upload news stories, images and features more immediately – so if there was something more time sensitive we could put it on the website straight away. The power of blogs is something that has grown in importance within the last 5 years particularly and it has now become an essential element for any magazine to participate in.

Who is your audience? Please explain...
Well obviously we have readers that cover a whole range of different ages from early teens to past eighty – but our core demographic is really the 25plus age bracket – gay men who are looking for something a bit more reflective of their lifestyle. These are the guys who can still enjoy a good night out or party, but who are not necessarily out clubbing on the scene every night. They enjoy regular travel and spending more time and money on their apartment or home. Our editorial strand is aimed at them and offers a range of content that connects with them.

How long have you been a part of reFRESH? Provide some highlights and memorable moments...
Well this one is quite easy, as I’ve been with reFRESH since the very first planning meeting. It was my concept and idea from the beginning. I was working as an editor-in-chief of a largish contract publishing company back in 2001 and sat on the management team. We regularly brainstormed new business ideas and I’d had an idea for a gay lifestyle magazine in my head for a while. I introduced it to the team and they liked the idea and decided to turn my idea into a reality. Our first issue came out in 2002 and I've been there throughout. Memorable moments are difficult to pin point – as everyday provides something memorable. I think I’d highlight the amazing opportunities the magazine has provided me when it comes to meeting new and interesting people everyday from all over the world!

With growing environmental concerns and pressure, how has the economy affected the print version of reFRESH and how do you plan to keep pace (or surpass) emerging trends towards electronic publications?
Well I’m afraid I’m a traditionalist when it comes to printing – I love reading the blogs and online e-zines but I still like the physicality of buying a printed magazine. That is something no blog will be able to do. Of course we've had our ups and downs with advertising (which is the first area to be hit in times of economic crisis) but you've just got to be brave and when necessary tighten your belt and ride out any storm. Regarding the environmental element - all the printers we've worked with have good eco-policies with regards to paper sourcing etc.

What is the best aspect of reFRESH? What can we find in reFRESH that no other competitor has?
Well I think is that is had a good breadth of content. I’m lucky enough to work with some superb writers and photographers, many of whom have been with me since very early on in the magazine’s life. So we offer an alternative perspective on what our competitors cover – our stranding on interiors, travel, food & drink and culture is certainly much stronger than any of the other newsstand gay magazines.

Have you ever been a model or a photographer? What kind of advice do you have for aspiring models and photographers?
Goodness me no!!! I’m not sure that I would have made any career as a model – am strictly a ‘face for radio’ type of guy. That being said throughout my career to date I have worked with many photographers and models and also know, as any editor should, exactly what I’m looking for. I would say to any aspiring model and photographer – never be predictable and always look at how you can do something unexpected. I’ve been supportive of new talent since day 1 as I made a vow when I first became an editor that I would do whatever I can to nurture and assist emerging talent as I remembered how difficult it was for me to get my first break.

Who or what inspires you?
Well I’m motivated by success – and the need to constantly better each issue. I’ve always said to people, if I ever produce a 100% perfect magazine that would be the time to look for career change. So that is a good personal inspiration. I’m very lucky with my friends and family as well – although many of them don’t work in the business they are a great source of support for me. And if I’m really feeling in need of a pick me up, I slip Devil Wears Prada into my DVD player and that always motivates me!!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Being happy I hope – and working in magazines. I’d like to say still editing reFRESH but you never know what’s around the corner. I’d also like to be happily settled down with a guy living in the countryside with two dogs!

What trends do you see emerging within the fashion industry today?
I’m not avoiding your question, but rather approaching it from a different angle and would say that the part of the industry that we see and work with is full of some extremely exciting and creative designers who I hope will all make a bigger impact in the years to come – one in particular, Nico Didonna, has been around for a while and deserves far greater credit for his amazingly creative designs and accessories.

Nerd Boy

It's been a while since I've posted a new blog or a series of images, as I've been taking some time off from the modeling world to enjoy family and friendships. Also, I've been wrapping up my modeling bootcamp session, which included putting on muscle weight throughout the fall/winter months. I'm now in slim-trim mode to carve out that muscle. It's really not that significant, but I'm hoping to see the results of my efforts this spring when everything begins to show more prominently.

That being said, I decided to do a little concept shoot by reuniting with Will Matias of Saitam Photography. I'm calling it "Nerd Boy," something I was referred to a lot in high school. As a victim of bullying myself, I find this series metaphoric for those who experience the same troubles I had while I was growing up, being the nerdy kid with big glasses for example. It's funny how some things just never change. However, I'm in full accordance with the "it gets better" message that's spreading across the world, and this series is intended as irony, a mocking of my former high school classmates who thought I wouldn't amount to much.

Nothing fancy, nothing shirtless, nothing too revealing - just a simple bookworm concept with a white t-shirt and blue jeans. I'm very pleased with the simplicity we achieved here and feel the images turned out better than expected! EthanSays felt charmed by the series and posted the entire set on its blog - stop by and check out the spread here.

This 2011 debut kicks off what I hope to be an exciting modeling year for me. Stay tuned...

Updated Digitals

New year, new polaroids! I'm in pursuit of the ultimate portfolio! Well, at least I'm going to try. Special thanks to Kai Jankovic for being oftentimes harsh and uber-critical but always helpful in his advice and steering of my modeling progress. Per his suggestion, I updated my digital portfolio to include these shots. I'm hoping to have these sent to the professional biosphere in the near future for potential gigs and go-sees. Wish me luck!

Flashback: Winter Hewolf

Last year around this time, I worked with DC photographer Miguel Lem on a warm winter series. At that time, I hadn't really invested much effort or energy into modeling but when Miguel asked me to shoot, I took a look at his portfolio and saw an opportunity to expand and challenge myself.

Although an older series of images, I never really posted these on my portfolio or on my blog but after reflecting on a year's worth of progress I feel they deserve some recognition. As you can see, I've changed physically from the time I shot these (grown out my hair, and beefed up some) and my expressions have become more focused and emotive. Enjoy!

Rudy K Recap

October officially marked the beginning of my fall/winter photoshoot series, and I was excited to meet and shoot with Rudy K (see the preview here). I took notice of his work back in early Spring and have since become a big fan, but I knew I had to gain more experience (and muscle tone) before setting up a test session with him. After summer concluded, I evaluated my portfolio and determined that I'd give him a shout.

I was excited but I knew I had to be strong! Perhaps I was even a little nervous! But after watching multiple seasons of Tyra's Next Top Model show, I knew what those models were going through - the pre-shoot jitters. But I didn't let it get to me, I just allowed my personality shine through and eventually I was calm enough to produce what I feel are some of my stronger and more dynamic images this year.

And perhaps I'm not the only one who feels this way. RockMyBlog, the sister site of YVY magazine, featured these images on their fashion site, giving the series a bonafide seal of approval. It's been a while since I've seen my work displayed by YVY (see Stones and Midnight Cowboy from earlier this year), so I was thrilled to see the feature.

There's a possiblity I'll be shooting with him again for a trampoline shoot but for now I'll just enjoy these latest additions to my portfolio book. Thank you Rudy for sharing your studio and your experiences with me.

Beautiful Photographer, Julian Vankim

It's been a beautiful life this week for Julian Vankim! Customarily, I enjoy sharing samples of my most recent work and any accolades I may have received, but from time to time I also try to showcase individual photographers and their accomplishments, especially if I've worked with them. And that's what today's blog is all about.

I first shot with Julian way back in March, before his sudden rise within the industry. I saw potential. We shot again in early summer for his Flow series and things seemed to get busier for the young photographer. His work became more refined, more artistic, and folks began to take notice...including EthanSays, one of the more prominent and industry-leading blog sites around. He debuted on with model Stephen Benedicto, followed by his Ribbon Series with the DC Cowboys, and continued to grow.

We shot together again (our 3rd shoot) back in August, and produced three amazing series, two of which have already been published on EthanSays (Drenched Relic and Executive Canvas). I had suggested that he take a chance and try to submit to Beautifulmag, another photography blog that showcases amazing works of other renowned photographers in the industry. Although they didn't take the bait at first, his submission definitely sparked their interest. They dug deeper into his portfolio and decided to give him his very first full-length feature on their website. And he's in great company, too...right alongside other notable photographers such as Rick Day, Dylan Rosser, and other heavyweights within the industry.

Cheers to Julian for his success! I'm sure there will be much more critical acclaim coming his way in the very near future. I'm happy to see him grow and excel in his passion - very inspiring!

Abandoned, by Brian Henry

No trespassing allowed! Okay, well that's what the signs said but they didn't prevent me and photographer Brian Henry from capturing this unconventionally unique series of images taken at two abandoned factories in Baltimore, MD. These two locations were full of interesting backdrops and visuals so I had a lot to work with.

Brian shot at these locations before so he was able to scout the best spots for shooting. These deserted factories were appropriate for the occasion, as much of his work contains an abandoned, often moody feel. I found it challenging not to upstage the setting but rather blend in with my surroundings which required more subdued expressions and poses. I hope I've been able to convey this concept yet still bring my Stingel spark.

Hope you enjoy this series of images as much as I did shooting them. I'm always learning how to challenge myself through photoshoots and I appreciate working with photographers like Brian Henry who bring a sensible and unconventional approach.

Under My Umbrella, by Will Matias

When it rains it pours! That's kind of how I would describe this series of images by Will Matias/Saitam Photography, featuring a guest appearance by model Robert Neff. Just like an isolated thunderstorm that rapidly dumps rain over a short period of time, this shoot didn't last very long. Granted, the post-editing took some time, but the shoot only took maybe 30 minutes.

For the limited time we had available, it was imperative to elevate my modeling skills. Thankfully, Will provided us with his concept in advance so that we weren't improvising at the last minute. Modeling with another individual was not foreign to me, for I've done it in the past with other shoots. Perhaps the most notorious instance was Masquerade, a darker and more erotic concept with model Jack Kirven. This time I turn up the charm and sensibility by bringing forth a softer character with a more poetic storyline.

"With this set I wanted to display the start of a relationship between two men. Done in an almost romantic style this shoot shows how two men meet after one shares his umbrella with a man who was soaking wet. With this good deed comes a chance for the two of them to not only meet but to ultimately fall in love"

And obviously I enjoyed seeing them displayed on EthanSays. This marks the first time (to my knowledge) Will's received high-praise for his photography from the critically-acclaimed website, although I'm certain you'll be hearing and seeing more from this talented photographer in the very near future. I'm happy to have worked with him and Rob on this beautiful series and look forward to my next concept shoot with Will: Gladiator!

My Portfolio Digitals

It's all starting to come together! I've finally gotten around to producing my first set of digitals (commonly referred to by the industry as polaroids) in my pursuit for modeling agency representation. Digitals are usually needed for agencies or scouts to see the raw, natural look of the model from different angles, unedited without any alterations or modifications. I already made Comp Cards and have an online portfolio at Model Mayhem, but I knew that if I wanted to take my career to the next level that I'll be required to have them.

Executive Canvas, by Julian Vankim

It's been a long day at the office! Time to take a load off. The second series from my evening shoot with Julian Vankim back in late-summer has been released. "Executive Canvas," a collection of black and white shots of me slowly taking off an article of clothing, attempts to portray the feelings elicited by the conventional white-collar employee after getting home from work.

I don't know how many times I came home from a stressful day on the job and stripped down to my undies, as if to forget the entire work day! This story-telling set of images intends to capture that moment right when you walk through the door and the first thing you want to do is get out of your work clothes. After all, you've spent all day trying to please your impossible boss, dealing with incompetent customers, and sat through pointless meetings all day. Even the commute to and from work has you frustrated. Don't even get me started on that one!

I'm very happy with this set! Once I saw the full series on EthanSays, I could not have envisioned a better platform. Artistic, sexy, focused, and thought-provoking - just a few of the countless qualities that characterize the contemporary website! And thanks to Julian, who has been on a roll lately! Trick or Treat! Get your Halloween bags ready because Ryan Colford and EthanSays are about to toss some lip-licking licorice for you to indulge in this season. I recently previewed Ryan's work in an earlier post (click here), and I'm excited to share with you the final set entitled "Red Licorice," the latest addition into Ryan's Candy Shoppe collection.

Ryan and I had expressed interest in working with each other for a few months leading up to shooting, and I've long been a fan of his Candy Shoppe series, so when he suggested having me model with red licorice I had a hard time passing up the opportunity. Perfect timing because the release of "Red Licorice" coincides with everyone being in the mood for something sweet during Halloween. It's the secret ingredient!

I'm pleased with how these conceptual images turned out. In fact, one of the images from the series was picked up by Get Out! Magazine and featured on the cover of this month's Halloween edition. GOOTH is a pocket-sized, quick reference guide NYC’s gay scene. The magazine’s website, goothmag.com, supplements the print edition with exclusive, up-to-date content as well.

I've learned that modeling is seldom about the model at all but rather fulfilling a photographer's vision on how he wants to portray someone, so these images are not typical fitness or fashion by any means. This was another great lesson in being open-minded, stepping out of my comfort zone, and accepting ideas that push the envelope and challenge the standards of what modeling is about.

I tried something new! I just hope I succeeded in fulfilling the concepts Ryan had in mind. That to me is a successful model.

Photoshoot Preview: Rudy K Photography

Last week, I was very pleased to shoot with fashion/fitness photographer Rudy K on a few concept shots. As you can tell, his work is very strong and his models express powerful emotions, so I knew I had to bring all my strengths to the shoot. Although I felt we captured some pretty cool images, I actually learned a lot from Rudy's direction. Such things as throwing your hips back and away from the camera, shifting weight, making an S-shape with your body, and other posture techniques can really impact the way you look in a shot.

I came home after the shoot and practiced some of these with my digital camera's auto-timer and was impressed by how simple adjustments of your body can influence the look and mood of an image. I shifted my body to one side, twisted slightly 3/4, and threw my right hip back and away from the camera. All that's left is to give it an expression, but it was late at night and I just wanted to test some things I had learned earlier in the evening. I hope to work with Rudy again in the near future on other possible concepts he has in mind (such as jumping on a trampoline), but for now please enjoy some of my favorite images of Rudy's exceptional portfolio. Stay tuned for the final images soon.

Photoshoot Preview - Saitam Photography

In my constant pursuit to seek out innovative photographers, I collaborated with model Rob Neff and photographer Will Matiaz of Saitam Photography on a couples shoot in Silver Spring, MD. Matiaz's creative imagination drew me in, for his images are often whimsical and brilliantly constructed. I first noticed him through a fellow co-model of mine, Alexandra Merino (aka MetalClown), pictured below who creates her own costumes and outfits for her photoshoots. The collaboration between her and Matiaz produces a sparkling array of fantastical imagery, so colorful and vibrant that my eyes can't ignore.

I won't give away the details behind our couples shoot, but one thing I really liked was the poetic story that's being told through the images. Once the three of us talked through the concept and theme, we began portraying the characters as if being filmed for a movie. I'm looking forward to the final outcomes and seeing our story come to life. In addition to this, I have a solo shoot planned with Will in the coming weeks. Think Halloween! Y.M.I.J. Reflections

Looking back at my modeling career, one individual was paramount in my growth within the industry and the success I've experienced. Since first shooting with Y.M.I.J. back in January, our shoots together have resulted in some of the best images in my portfolio and have received kudos from some of the popular crossover blogs on the internet. Our collaborations have even earned us our very first magazine exposure, not to mention the numerous website features, all of which have paved the way for me to work with other esteemed photographers.

I'm writing up this blog post as a tribute to Y.M.I.J. as he takes his skills and artistry to New York. As a residence of DC for the past couple of years, I was fortunate to have shot with him on multiple occasions and learned a great deal about the modeling world. We've become great friends in the process, too! As he packs up and moves his career forward to NY, I want to thank him for playing an instrumental role in my growth as a model. Drenched Relic, by Julian Vankim

Grab a towel and dry yourself off. Even though summer is over, I still managed to get a little soak'n wet at my latest photoshoot with Julian Vankim. "Drenched Relic," a series of images captured in front of black seamless paper with water being poured onto my head (with assistance from fellow model, Rob Neff) seemed like a simple enough concept, but ever since I began challenging my own expressions and emotions, I wanted to bring those lessons to my shoot. Combined with my grown-out beard, a full head of hair, and a little bit of styling, it was enough to grab the attention of EthanSays, the popular fashion-centric and modern culture website.

Reflecting back at this concept, I've always wanted to do a soak-themed shoot. I was mildly successful at a previous attempt, but when Julian shared the idea of capturing water dripping from my face I saw an opportunity to improve. I also wanted to avoid the usual crop of cliched images you often see models do. With Julian's creative eye behind the camera and my growing experience with modeling, I think we both created an original collection of images that exceeded my own expectations. Thank you Julian, Rob, and Ethan for a fun and successful collaboration!

Washington, DC Hosts NOH8 Campaign

Welcome to the nation's capital, Adam Bouska and Jeff Parshley! Tonight, the renowned photographer and his partner are stopping by Cobalt in Washington, DC to help spread awareness about their NO H8 Campaign, a photo project and silent protest created in direct response to the passage of Proposition 8 in California.

The campaign started with portraits of everyday Californians who support Marriage Equality and soon rose to celebrities, military personnel, brothers and sisters, law enforcement, lesbian mothers, directors, politicians, newlyweds, and more. Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths symbolizing their voices not being heard and "NO H8" painted on one cheek in protest. The campaign has grown considerably and what better way to make a statement than by doing so in DC.

Funds raised by the NOH8 Campaign will be used to continue promoting and raising awareness for marriage equality and anti-discrimination through NOH8’s interactive media campaign. This includes bringing the campaign to other cities around the country, as well as compiling the images for a large-scale media campaign. Under consideration is the expansion to television and radio broadcast, billboards, and magazines. Contributions are also used to cover the daily operations and maintenance necessary to run the rapidly growing campaign.

Photoshoot Preview: Ryan Colford

Fall weather settles in this weekend as my first autumn photoshoot of the season kicks off in New York with a couple concept shoots with the esteemed Ryan Colford. Notorious for his Candy Shoppe collection, Ryan has enjoyed editorial success with his delectable opus that features sexy eye-"candy," including cover images on Next Magazine, a comprehensive lifestyle resource for NY's GLBT community as well as other notable publications.

His most recent feature on EthanSays, "Frosted Cookies," displays the photographer's creative imagination by combining a sexy male model with tasty treats. I won't go into details, but Ryan has set aside a sweet tooth just for me when we collaborate this weekend.

Not only can Ryan capture succulent images such as ones you see here, but he also has an eye towards fashion and editorials. Spotted in such fashion-forward publications as reFRESH, FantasticsMag and Ohlala, Ryan's work spans beyond the realm of his candy series. I've purchased some of the more upscale fall threads of the season and can't wait to model them for Ryan. It should make for an exciting photoshoot this weekend!

Photoshoot Preview: Kemuel Valdes

Labor Day usually marks the end of summer, and it will certainly close the curtain on my photoshoot series for the season as well. I'm taking a vacation to Miami with good friends this weekend, but before kicking off the labor day fun in sunny Florida, I'll have the pleasure of working with renowned photographer, Kemuel Valdes.

Kemuel has been on my photographer wishlist for quite some time, however the only times I've been to Miami were to play tennis. Mr. Valdes has photographed some of the best fashion and fitness models I know, both male and female. He's received accolades from Ohlala and has been credited by Aussiebum, but the critical acclaim pales in comparison to the subtle beauty that speaks louder than any website publication or advertisement. His images are elegant, subtle, and often very story-telling. His models portray an inner beauty through their expressions and poses, and Valdes' artistic merit captures it every time.

I'm very fortunate to have this opportunity and humbled by his acceptance to work with me. Although I'm really looking forward to spending a wonderful vacation down in Florida with friends and enjoying Miami beach, the photoshoot with Valdes will be a welcoming end to my summer photoshoot series. Modeling Bootcamp II

A few months ago I had undergone a series of training exercises with my favorite photographer, Y.M.I.J. (see the related post here) to better display emotions, expressions, and bringing character out of my images. It was a great success, and the training paid off as I got some of the best images to date from working with Y.M.I.J. and Joe TickNow.

Now, I'm going to be taking on a new assignment over the course of the next several months: Modeling Bootcamp II. I have a full artillery of kitchen equipment now that I've moved into my new place, new protein powder (cytogainer), and a mindset to bulk up during the fall and winter months. I'm not going to be fearing carbs, nor will I hold back on the calories. I'll be training harder at the gym, lifting heavier weights, and consulting a personal trainer on a semi-regular basis to ensure I'm meeting my fitness goals. This means that I may be cutting back on the number of photoshoots I do, but it's the sacrifice I'm willing to take to drive my modeling "career" in a new direction. My long hair has given me a different look already.

I've been slowly integrating this new course of action over the last month to get ready for what lies ahead of me. I'll be promoting the Ripped Genes Calendar and shooting with Kemuel Valdes down in Miami - I'll be prepared for both of those, but then it's serious business when I get back home. I'm likely to do a few shoots here and there throughout the fall/winter months to keep my portfolio fresh (probably some editorial fashion work), but I still plan to stay the course. Wish me luck!

Shawn Stingel: 2011 Ripped Genes Calendar Model

After auditioning and interviewing for consideration in photographer Robert Mercer's 2011 Ripped Genes Calendar last November (2009), I felt slightly intimidated and perhaps even a bit underqualified for a sexy and edgy men's calendar. I had seen his previous editions and the stunning models he selected but felt only mildly confident that I'd even be considered as a wildcard (some of his models have gone on to sign contracts with agencies around the country).

I had high hopes and was very nervous last year after my audition with Mercer, but months had passed since that initial interview. Within that time, I had gained valuable experience by shooting with talented photographers (many from NY), winning the TeamDC fashion show/model contest (Mercer was a judge), and being mentored by former model and now esteemed photographer from Y.M.I.J. 25 guys out of 500+ were chosen to do a photoshoot, but the calendar only features 18. Even though I passed the first round, had many modeling experiences under my belt, and winning the fashion show contest, I was still feeling the pressure!

All the hard work at the gym, the numerous photoshoots, and advice/mentorship paid off in the end. Mercer announced that I had made the calendar! Needless to say, I was thrilled from hearing the news! I probably acted like a little kid in the candy store. I even called mom!

Even though I'm done with shooting and the calendar release party has passed, there will be various upcoming events and media shows in which I'll be asked to represent the Ripped Genes calendar. Luckily for me I got a headstart with Mercer's Nutcracker fashion show this past December. I've also gained more experience by working fashion shows for Universal Gear as a model throughout the year - these will all come in handy when I walk the Ripped Genes runway in the future. I'm quite pleased with the results of the photoshoot and being Mr. March. I only saw one image through Mercer's camera at the time, but "Oooooh" was my reaction! Thanks again to Robert Mercer for having faith in my abilities - I won't let you down, boo! =)

Widening the Audience

In an attempt to reach a larger demographic and exposure in other arenas of the industry, UK-based Harlot Magazine featured yours truly as the hottie of the week. As an e-zine geared towards women, Harlot displays various stories on sexy styles, erotica (not porn), and "tasty totty." I pondered for a while about appearing in a female sex magazine, but since I'm trying to broaden my audience and gain exposure in other arenas, I felt this feature would foster some of that growth. Plus, the interview questions were fun and amusing! Even I got a kick out of it!

Heat Wave, by Joe TickNow

The first set in my summer trilogy with Joe TickNow has finally been released on Beautiful, a prominent blogsite within the realm of photography and fashion, known for featuring some of the hottest models and photographers around. This series of summer sizzlers was the first release from my shoot with Joe TickNow but was delayed after Beautiful expressed interest. We released two teaser images from this set as a preview and now the trilogy has come full-circle.

I've never modeled with surfboards before, nor have I surfed a day in my life but luckily I did my research in advance. I browsed through multiple surfing magazines and webpages for inspiration on my "character" in hopes I wouldn't look silly with a giant surfboard in my hand or wetsuit hanging on me. This was an aspect of modeling I began taking seriously, much like how an actor must embody a character he/she has to portray.

I must say that I am pretty impressed with how these turned out, and they look amazing on Beautiful's website (for the full feature along with additional images, click here), not to mention simply having fun with this concept. Maybe I will take up surfing as a hobby one of these days. Doubtful, but at least I can say I made it look convincing. =)

Pin-Up, by Y.M.I.J.

After going through modeling bootcamp with Y.M.I.J. I had told myself that I wanted to take my modeling endeavors to the next level. At that time, I was posing in front of photographers trying to create expressions and poses while my thoughts were roaming elsewhere. I reached a stalemate with myself, not even sure what my next move would (or should) be.

"Pin-up" is my first shoot with Y.M.I.J. since the 'rehab,' and I must say that I turned it up a few notches this time. Granted, there was a bit of alcohol involved (as there always is with my shoots with Y.M.I.J.), but the added challenges were the tight space and limited time for the shoot. It didn't matter, I knew that within the brief amount of time we had, there was no room to think, no time to worry about outside influences that sometimes cloud my thoughts. I had to model, and that's what I did!

Critically, it's receiving praise from esteemed photographers and blogsites, including reFRESH Magazine. All acclaim aside, I'm very happy and pleased with the outcomes of this shoot. I love the story being told with these images, and my expressions reflect an inner discovery of my skills. It's not just your flashy, sexy underwear shots - there is emotion and connection behind them. This is the path I hope to continue paving for myself in future shoots. Thanks to Y.M.I.J. for your professional mentorship and guidance. He dishes out tough love, but I know in the end it's for the best.

Summer Breeze, by Joe TickNow

My summer trilogy with Joe TickNow concludes with a breezy fashion series, a small collection of shots captured in the shaded areas of NY. Intended as a cool-off from my other two series ("Heat Waves" and "99 Degrees"), this final collaboration with Joe brings the heat down by showcasing some of summer's lighter threads, eliciting a cooler mood and relief from the summer blaze.

This was actually our first concept of the day but our third release together. The preview for "Heat Waves" debuted our trilogy while "99 Degrees" followed afterwards. We shot the breezy fashion series under a bridge first thing in the morning, a warm-up to the more steamy stuff that would ensue later in the day. My hair at this point had grown to a length that was malleable, so Joe was able to play with the styling more freely to achieve a summery look.

Joe and I hope you have enjoyed our collaborative trilogy of summer sizzlers including "Summer Breeze," our cool fashion set. Stay tuned for the final release of "Heat Waves," set to scorch next week. I also want to wish Joe continued success in his seasonal photoshoot series. Flow, by Julian Vankim

A few weeks ago, I was fortunate to reunite with the young and talented Julian Vankim. I modeled for him earlier in the year, but when he approached me and other models (Rob Neff is pictured below) about an underwater shoot for the summer I couldn't resist. He showed me a few concepts (including the use of shear sheets on a glass ceiling), and immediately I was drawn to his themes, for this would be something different and imaginative.

The first set of images were done on a clear glass flooring with Julian shooting up through it with thin sheets. These came out rather interesting and really show off Julian's technique and artistic eye. We took the shoot outdoors by the pool and underwater, bringing the sheets with us and seeing what kinds of poses we could create. My favorite shot of the day was my above-water headshot, a shot completely worthy of appearing on my Model Mayhem portfolio.

I enjoyed this shoot, for it challenged me to model in a capacity that's atypical of work I've done in the past. I respect and appreciate Julian's creativity and was happy to be part of a challenging yet rewarding photoshoot experience. Fitness, fashion, and commercial modeling will always be my areas of expertise, but I'm always up for exploring new areas of the industry to demonstrate my skills in hopes of widening my marketability. This has been a step in that direction.

Below is a sneak peak, behind-the-scenes look at how the photoshoot took place. As you can see, Julian directed us accordingly and took his own skills to another level by repeatedly submerging himself and his camera underwater to capture the shot.

Currently sunbathing in post-production is the first set from our trilogy, "Heat Waves." Joe and I have released two teaser images from that set already, so stay tuned for its scorching premiere in the coming weeks. The summer fashion circuit heats up this weekend as Universal Gear hosts its Swimwear Fashion Show at Town Danceboutique in Washington, DC this Saturday, July 10th. Models, including myself, will debut some of the retailer's newest arrivals, including speedos, squarecuts, and trunks by Andrew Christian, Carioca, Pistol Pete, and many other popular labels. This marks my 4th fashion show collaboration this year with the popular men's clothing apparel store and I'm excited to be part of their lineup!

Mid-Year Recap

June is coming to a close, so I thought it'd be appropriate to do a mid-year self-assessment. This is by no means a complete summary, just some of the more memorable highlights of the year for me so far and what lies ahead (including a sneak peak of "Heat Waves").

The beginning of 2010 kickstarted my modeling pursuits into high gear by reuniting with a good friend of mine, the talented photographer of Y.M.I.J. What was initially intended to be test shots turned into a solid foundation for my portfolio. "Pink Magic" earned critical acclaim from Ohlala and "Stereophone" was endorsed by Australia's Wearitout.au - both images remain prominent staples in both of our portfolios.

2010 came with a lot of great success, but also a lot of criticism. Earlier in the year my Facebook account was disabled for violating their Terms of Use, an instance I believe was due mostly to my images being reported (by the bitter, jealous hater types). I had lost a lot of networking contacts with photographers and industry insiders, so earning all those folks back proved to be challenge and quite taxing. Plus, I had temporarily lost all my images, including those of friends, family, and my adorable nephew! It became personal at that point, and to this day I remain skeptical of people's intentions. In addition to Facebook, I've come to learn that my images are being stolen and used for Male Wanted ads, fake profiles are being created across the internet, and cases of identity theft have been reported.

Spring was rosier though. Couple months into the year I worked with fashion photographer, Tony Veloz. I'd always been a big fan of his work, and was quite thrilled and excited to have worked with him - twice. The first set of images were all test shots as well, but I named the set "Stones" and thought I would try my luck by submitting them to YVY. A few days later, the images were beautifully displayed on their website. The second shoot I did with Tony was just as groundbreaking. I created a Spring Tennis series that resulted in a cover ad for upcoming 5IVE Magazine and a full-page spread in Germany's Display Magazine. The cover picture for the Spring Tennis series remains one of my all-time favorites!

Other spring success stories included multiple fashion shows with Universal Gear, winner of Team DC model search, and exposure from fashion websites, including DNA with Y.M.I.J., Ohlala with Kevin Almond of Haringman Photography, YVY with Y.M.I.J. (Midnight Cowboy), Beautiful with Robert Charlies (New Blood), and featured articles on MaleFitnessModels.net.

The summer got off to a sizzling start as well. I reconnected with AJR for a 2nd photoshoot down in Orlando which debuted my summer photoshoot season, CSA International, DailyJocks.com, and MaleModels.us have begun displaying my portfolio online through their Facebook fanpages, the popular Strobe180 produced a video portfolio titled "Killer Looks," and continued website success from EthanSays.com with Robert Charles (A Body Study), Homotography with Y.M.I.J. (Masquerade), and Metrovelvet with Haringman (Robert Redford Series). And finally, two of my passions collided twice this year, resulting in my first ever print editorials. Display Magazine featured my Spring Tennis cover image (from Tony Veloz) in their "Eye Candy" section, and Compete Magazine displayed exclusive images from Y.M.I.J. as their MVP centerfold.

The summer forecast continues to be hot and humid, as I just wrapped up a photoshoot with Joe TickNow up in NY this past weekend. Our debut images will be part of a series he's calling "Heat Waves."

The high fashion-oriented Metrovelvet launched their newly-designed website this week and I'm flattered and excited to debut their "New in Town" column. Featuring designer, models, photographers and style, Metrovelvet covers many facets of the fashion industry, including Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, Moscow and Miami Swim, as well as London & Milano Fashion Week. I continue my summer photoshoot series this weekend up in New York with the talented photographer, Joe Ticknow. His latest efforts have earned him rave reviews from Beautiful Mag and Ohlala, and I'm pleased to be working with him this weekend. I've been looking forward to this shoot for quite some time after a few schedule delays, but we're both finally ready with a clever concept in mind. I won't give away the details of what we have planned (it's a surprise), but I can guarantee you it'll be something very suitable for the summer and modeling I've never done before.

Two magazine features in less than a month - I can't complain! This time in the form of Compete Magazine, a sports illustrated-esque magazine featuring comprehensive global sports information to and for the gay community in hopes of inpsiring readers to participate in sports as athletes and fans. Each month, they select and interview an athletic "MVP," an individual who participates actively in organized/league sports. Guess who happens to be an extremely competitive tennis player? And with the summer tennis season in full swing, a busy tournament schedule ahead, and the professional circuit's Grand Slams well underway, I find this article quite suitable.

Compete reached out to me and expressed interest so I contacted Y.M.I.J. Photography and asked if we could collaborate on a set of new images for this exclusive feature. We found a nearby fencing enclosure, I brought my tennis gear and outfit, and we spent a Sunday evening capturing images. Our efforts from this shoot resulted in a centerfold feature for June's MVP section. Many thanks to Y.M.I.J. for another successful collaboration and to Alfonzo Chavez of Compete Magazine for the published article. It looks amazing!

Display Magazine Feature, "Eye Candy"

It's finally starting to happen...magazine time! My pursuit to make it into print has paid off! Display Magazine, a German-based editorial magazine that focuses on entertainment, current events, fashion, and sports published a biographical feature in their "Eye Candy" section. I was fortunate to have worked with Tony Veloz on the photography they used in the magazine - the online version contains some of my other recent work with Y.M.I.J. and RCi. "Masquerade," by Y.M.I.J.

The long-awaited "Masquerade" compilation has finally been released and I could not be any happier! Conceptually, these images are intended to capture the "masking" of online hookups - through fake profiles and misguided information, men create these false/enhanced characters. You're presented with just a "mask," not knowing who the other person really is. The handcuffs act as a metaphor, symbolizing the repressed, guilty urges that are at times easier to fulfill through anonymous sex.

"Masquerade" is proving quite popular (and controversial) with critics as well. The series was recently published on Homotography, a fashion and photography website that showcases artistic work with a homo-erotic sensibility. It has a large fan following on Facebook, with over 5k members and continues pushing the boundaries of creative artistry.

It's a darker and more complex series than anything I've attempted before, but underneath lies a subtle innocence that lured me to this project. I was fortunate to work with professionals like Jack Kirven and the multi-faceted photographer of Y.M.I.J. It's because of their indulgence with the shoot's concept that I was able to embody my character and become someone different, challenging my modeling skills and taking it to the next level.

These were intended to be artistic nudes, but Robert and I felt that by eliminating this concept and focusing more on body lines and textures we could create a stronger series of shots. The result? My Birthday Trifecta of Gifts

On top of all the wonderful birthday wishes my friends and family sent me, I received three very unexpected and surprising gifts as well...

First off, I'm happy to announce that I've become part of the CSA Models - Australia & International family. CSA picked up my portfolio, adding it to their growing list of model profiles and has plans to share modeling assignments with me in the near future. CSA was founded in 2009 and has become a global entity with over 20 years of industry experience and collaborates with models (male & female), Dancers, Choreography, Fashion shows, Catwalk, TV & Films casting, Photographic, Magazine & Newspaper editorials, and Event Productions. They're affiliated with famous companies such as Boss Models, Calypso Models, Calvin Klein, and the Ford Agency. Needless to say, I'm quite thrilled to be represented by this fast-growing modeling firm.

The second birthday gift comes from MaleModel.us, an extensive modeling website and Facebook fanpage (with over 33,000 fans and counting...), dedicated to displaying and promoting some of the hottest models in the industry. I've been trying to be featured here for quite some time and they finally took notice, posting images from Midnight Cowboy and my Ohlala-featured set.

Finally, Michael Novotny, the one-man-team responsible for the wildly successful MaleFitnessModels.net, featured me for the third time this year, providing audiences with an update on some of my most recent photoshoots. I have a close working relationship with Mr. Novotny and we email each other quite frequently, sharing ideas about modeling and the industry as a whole while giving each other insight from various perspectives. Needless to say, when he approached me about being featured again, I couldn't say no. Happy Birthday, indeed!

Modeling Bootcamp

In order to stay fresh and innovative in all aspects of your career, you must be able to reflect on previous experiences and analyze your current state. You don't want to remain stagnant, you want to continue moving forward even if you don't know the direction your career may be heading, as you can't predict who will see your work or what assignments you will be offered.

In my case, to achieve that next level of excellence it's time for me to undergo modeling bootcamp! After shooting with my favorite photographer (YMIJ/Jimy Kosmakos) on a potential magazine feature, he pointed out many flaws that were inhibiting me from nailing the shots. We got a few keepers, but not enough to where I was pleased. I was torn between conflicting thoughts - trying to convey a competitive tennis player and making it look model-esque. The images could not have portrayed my confusion any better. We still managed to salvage a handful of images, but it triggered Jimy to diagnose me with "model fatigue."

Over the course of the next few weeks I will be studying and learning about this industry from a more detailed perspective, from experts with years of experience and backgrounds. Jimy will be providing me with literature and source material to read such as fashion and runway print, various televised tutorials and programs, and other means necessary to study modeling from a broader perspective.

So it's time to shape up! I will be going to Orlando to shoot with the AJR family again, so this bootcamp training could not have come at a better moment. In addition, I have a potential magazine shoot with Jimy later this month, which will require me to be on point! The bar has been raised, and I'm ready to hunker down and do what it takes. Wish me luck...

The AJR Experience

From my preview post, it may have appeared inevitable that I was going to spend an entire weekend in Orlando doing a photoshoot with AJRimaging. This past weekend's events were far from what I expected, but I was also more disappointed in myself to be so close-minded that I focused solely on tangible images that I almost missed out on experiencing the AJR family. Is this what modeling is about? Just taking good images so you can move on to the next photographer in hopes of just repeating the cycle over and over? Where is the emotional connection to all of this? Why am I modeling to begin with? How can I learn and grow from each experience with a new photographer? There must be more...

And AJ taught me these lessons and answered some of these questions. Here I was, wrapped up in my own ego that I was unable to convey strong feelings or emotions in front of his camera. AJ had seen a void within me, an emotional disconnect that separated him from the subject in front of him. I was stagnant. As a former model and now an esteemed photographer, he put his camera down, we both walked away, and he had a long chat that took place over the entire weekend. They are called AJR Imaging and Consulting after all.

It was therapy time, or what I prefer, "tough love." After our first evening of shooting, we took the entire next day off so I could re-align my focus, to disengage myself from the outside world. It was a turning point when after hitting the gym, releasing my nervous and anxious energy, having a hearty lunch, and waking up from a long nap that AJ's feedback kicked into high gear.

That previous night, I was just posing in front of him. Anyone can pose, but just like Meryl Streep who can embody any role without any emotional fear, it was time for me to portray my inner softness and subtlety. I'm still learning how to do this, but AJ taught me that once you find those feelings that link to your inner soul you can convey just about anything you want. Needless to say, he hit a sensitive chord with me when he asked me to think about my nephew Hunter. It's not enough that AJ asked me to think of him but in the way he was able to withdraw those emotions that I was able to connect with the camera in the way he envisioned. The headshots we created together put tears in my eyes, for I've never seen this soft side of me in images before. They're effortlessly sexy.

Although you won't always nail it on the first click, the dozens of drafts we sifted through looked much brighter and more energetic than day one. We concluded the night with a couple more shots, including our final image of the weekend: "Torture." AJ is currently developing a Warrior Series photobook and will be including this shot of me with the sword close to my face within his book. He originally wanted me to have a bow-and-arrow, but the equipment didn't arrive until after I left, so we went with the sword. All of the equipment was hand-made and was not easy to handle, but I was up for the challenge. After "Torture," we didn't shoot another image the rest of the weekend. It was time for me to just have fun!

I'm thankful for AJ and Scott for believing in me and opening their home to me. On top of just enjoying myself with them and getting awesome pictures, I was fortunate enough to experience a number of exciting things. They took me to see my first Cirque du Soleil show, La Nouba; I enjoyed Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues; I rode roller coasters and experienced Universal Studios for the first time; and I played video games with my photographer for hours! It was after taking AJ's advice that I was able to enjoy these moments! I'm also happy to say that I'm going back for another visit during the long Memorial Day weekend! This was my AJR experience.

Robert Redford Series Released

The wait is over! I've released my 60s-inspired Fashion Series from photographer Kevin Almond of Haringman Photography. The first set of images I released with Kevin resulted in an exclusive feature on Ohlala magazine ("Ohlala, Baby"), and now I'm proud to display or Robert Redford-inspired collaborative set, our second and final series. You may recall my enthusiasm leading up to this shoot last month, so I'm very happy to share this set with you.

Oh, and a special wardrobe stylist credit shout out goes to Jimy Kosmakos of Y.M.I.J for providing fashion consultation during preparation. All that shopping paid off in the end!

Photoshoot Preview: AJRimaging

I'm starting to wind down my spring photoshoot season but one of the milestones from it will be this weekend's shoot down in Orlando with the amazing AJRimaging! I've admired the work of this talented photographer for a long time now, and earlier this year AJ agreed to shoot with me. Needless to say I was humbly thrilled and flattered.

We picked a date a couple months ago and have stuck to it ever since. In fact, I write this blog post today as I lay in bed at his wonderful home in sunny Orlando, drafting up my preview of what I'm confident will be an exciting and eventful weekend. As you can tell, his work is phenomenal! As I enjoy writing about a weekend that has yet to happen, I'm already anxious and impatient to see what he can do with me! If his work is any indication, I have a lot to look forward to this weekend! :)

AJ works with some of the most talented and well-respected models in the industry. Some have gone on to sign big contracts in New York, Miami, and all over the world! Many of his subjects participate regularly in fashion and underwear campaigns for various fashion, fitness, and lifestyle magazines. He sees talent and fosters their skills, hoping to bring out the best in a model to reveal his/her potential. I'd say he's done a fine job of that!

I'm not the least bit surprised of his success or of his models. As AJ states, "My goal is to capture the heart of the subject, character, the mood of the project, the highlight of a product; and to produce clean, vibrant, strong images. I consider myself an eternal work in progress, always evolving, always learning, driven by my commitment to improve my craft." Well stated, AJ.

Springwolf by Robert Charles

Introducing, "Springwolf." This 3-image set by Robert Charles of RCimagery is part of my weekend photoshoot down in Raleigh, NC from a few weeks ago. We hadn't really envisioned such a lively and colorful series while shooting (or even beforehand), but one of the things I wanted to add to my portfolio were some fun fashion shots. Robert, a more fitness-oriented photographer, was a bit out of his element but luckily he had an experienced model as his subject. =)

Prior to shooting anything that weekend, Robert and I took a trip to the mall and hit up the trend-setters: Express, H&M, Diesel, and Nordstroms. I brought a few articles with me as well, including some accessories and sunglasses to have as options. Not the most comfortable shopping for a fashion shoot, Robert successfully chose most of the clothing you see in these shots. After all, those are HIS red shoes by the way!

As is customary for my photoshoots, dance music and alcoholic beverages complimented our session. Ever have an ice cream martini or a gelato-tini? DE-licious! I also have a signature song that really gets me pumped and loose for a photoshoot: Lady Gaga's "Telephone." I'll listen to just about anything to get me in the mood to dance, but I peak once that song plays! I have a special connection to that song, though - the banner picture on my blog, "Stereophone" was created when I first listened to it during a shoot.

Needless to say, we wrapped things up around 3am after the coffee-flavored vodka and the espresso tequila took their effect. Robert and I are proud of what we spawned: a colorful series of fashion shots that seemed to surprise us both. The images came together nicely and fit well as a set. A successful collaboration, indeed! Oowwwuuuu!

Cherry Poppin' Fun

Modeling for me needs to be enjoyable...Always! But sometimes it's okay to let yourself go and just be silly - we're only young once, right? I seldom stray from my usual routine of dieting and exercise during the week and maintain my strict discipline rigorously. And that includes no alcohol whatsoever...except for when I shoot with Jimy Kosmakos/Y.M.I.J. This is Y.M.I.J.'s first outdoor shoot, so we needed the liquid encouragement.

The night began rather soberly: shopping for inspiration at H&M (of course), walking around the side streets of Cleveland Park scoping out potential locations, just your basic prep work. But you see, Jimy and I get sidetracked a lot, which shouldn't come as a surprise considering the three shots of tequila (top quality, I might add) and half a bottle of wine we had downed before a single flash of his camera. We're no alcoholics by any means and I'm not endorsing this activity to my audience, but I must admit that we produce some killer images this way! I don't know, you tell me...

I won't go into details of how we came up with the name of this image we call Cherry, but just use your imagination and it may come to you. One of those things that makes you go, "Hmm..."

Smartwolf's Flower Power

This post is a tad overdue, but earlier last month I had the pleasure of working with the esteemed photographer, Carlo Iyog of CMBI/New York on his flower book project. The concept was to draw out the masculinity of the male figure while he models with a flower. Soft, subtle, and tasteful but with the symbolism of a blossoming flower.

Making myself look masculine while holding a flower? Well, I had known about this concept for a few weeks so I was able to channel Carlo's vision successfully. Actually to be honest, I nailed it! The image received a warm reception from the modeling community since posting it on my port a day ago and just two days ago won the Model Mayhem's Picture-of-the-Day (POTD) contest, my first ever win! Some of you know how determined I've been at these contests, and now the victory is oh-so-sweet!

In return, Carlo agreed to do a New York City late-night fashion shoot in Times Square. It was an interesting concept and one that would have been a welcoming addition to my portfolio. We even spent most of the early evening shopping for the right wardrobe sets! However, it was bitterly cold up in NY the weekend we shot, Grand Central Station closed at 2am (a lovely spot for taking pictures), and we were unable to achieve any shots worth keeping. There were tons of people still walking the streets, traffic was abundant, and our shots looked more like tourist pictures instead of professionals at work.

So we headed back to Carlo's apartment around 3am and shot indoors instead. We wrapped around 4am, got a few hours of sleep, and I headed back to DC. I'm calling this fashion set, "Smartwolf."

I have to say that before heading up to New York for the shoot I was most excited about the fashion stuff moreso than doing the flower project. However, now that I've received most of the images (a few more are on their way), the flower shot is growing on me (no pun intended) and is becoming a strong and prominent image on my portfolio.

Being Robert Redford

Kevin Almond of Haringman Photography, a London-based photographer visiting the US on pleasure, challenged me in coming up with inspiration based on the 60s fashion era, influenced and perhaps pioneered by the penultimate Robert Redford. Far in advance, Kevin and I discussed themes, concepts, and agreed on a date for the photoshoot. He flew from across the pond, I traveled by bus, and we met in Manhattan's lower-east side in a small coffee shop on a cold, dreary Friday morning in March. Not the most pleasant conditions to be blessed with, but we made do with what we had.

Prior to my rendezvous with Kevin, my talented photographer Jimy Kosmakos of Y.M.I.J. offered consulting advice as wardrobe stylist to achieve that classic, slim 60s look. We shopped vintage clothing and accessories at stores like H&M, Express, Urban Outfitters, and Forever 21. In the end, Jimy was able to select 4-5 different looks for me that could be mixed and matched based on a small article change here and there.

Packed and ready for the shoot, I met with Kevin at the coffee shop and he was thrilled by the choices. We ventured out into the quieter streets of NY, hoping for as little disturbance as possible from patrons and began our shoot. A few hours later, we wrapped up our Robert Redford series and headed back for a few indoor concepts, mainly sexy underwear and fitness shots.

I realize the sexy stuff doesn't really follow the 60s-theme but one of the qualities that lured me into Kevin's work was his fitness photography. He's worked with some pretty notable fitness and fashion models over in London, and his work with them is brilliant! I was thrilled to do some of the more sexier, edgier images with him. Kevin's British eye towards photography could add some "cheekyness" to my portfolio; I'm looking forward to seeing our collaborative efforts!

Winner! Team DC Fashion Show Contest

All my hard work and determination paid off as the judges (and my online supporters) chose me as the 2010 Team DC Fashion Show Winner! I could not have done this without the enthusiasm that so many of my friends and facebook "fans" have showed me since online voting began a couple weeks ago. And to all the models who strutted right along with me, I owe you a drink next time I see you out! You boys were amazing and I had a blast frollicking around backstage with you all!

DNA Magazine Online Feature

Adding yet another commercial credit to my resume, I continue to expand internationally with a feature on DNA Magazine's blogsite. As most may know, DNA magazine's popularity spreads world-wide covering all realms of gay fashion, male modeling, photography, and pop culture. DNA continues to be Australia's best-selling magazine for gay men and is a prominent staple on many gay men's coffee tables here in the US.

DNA spotted two images by one of my favorite photographers, Jimy Kosmakos of Y.M.I.J. and wanted to feature them on their blog. They were created rather spontaneously during the snowstorm that hit DC recently. Jimy called me wanting to do a shoot and since we were both snowed in most of the time (and because it's Jimy) I decided to venture out, dragging my suitcase of clothing options through the snow.

It was obviously well worth it, as Jimy achived his vision and we got two stunning images that seemed to grab DNA's attention. This marks the second online publication from my collaboration with Jimy (our first was Ohlala's feature on Pink Magic)! YVY Magazine Feature - "Stones"

After gracing the cover of 5IVE magazine, my success into commercial print continued with my own column on YVY Magazine. YVY provides a daily dose of the hottest male models, fashion editorials, ad campaigns and portfolios of the best photographers from all over the world! I submitted a group of pictures from my first shoot with Tony Veloz last month that I call the "Stones Series." All nine images represent a stone of some kind, a theme I began to notice after Quartz, one of my favorite headshots I've ever done. I built upon that theme and was able to make a complete set out of the series of images, and YVY liked it.

Two Bottles, Two Models, One Photographer

Sounds like a canceled TV show on Fox! No, this "event" of sorts has been catching buzz for quite some time and finally came to a head (no pun intended...I think) this past Sunday. Teaming up with the handsome model Jack Kirven, I was called upon for an inspiration that my photographer Jimy Kosmakos/Y.M.I.J had been envisioning with two models. I won't disclose details, but I can provide one theme that will be displayed throughout the forthcoming image(s): Homoeroticism!

Jimy had set up a photoshoot with Jack weeks in advance, so he shot Jack's solo session first during the earlier part of the afternoon but switched gears when I arrived. With two bottles of wine, I came onto the set ready for the task at hand! I had never met Jack in person, only through email and Facebook, but it was probably the most fun I've ever had at a photoshoot, for the three of us got drunk, laughed, joked around, played around on Model Mayhem and danced to music - all in our skivies. Well except for Jimy, but next time!

Afterwards the three of us met up with one of my other great photographers, Julian Vankim. The rising artist joined us at Starbucks for a sober cup of Joe while we discussed our frolicking adventures and the industry. The three of us were coming down off our buzz and were probably a little much for the young gent, but we all had a great time together!

If you're wondering about the images, it will just have to be a mystery for a while. Jimy's mind is brewing at the moment and has plans for the resulting photos. Trust me, we're all going to be waiting on Jimy's next move with great anticipation!

Manny Fontanilla - Photoshop Artist

After posting my most recent work on my portfolio, Manny Fontanilla, a photoshop artist who not only touches up pictures but makes them into works of art, contacted me to express his admiration! Manny's imagery has earned him kudos from Model Mayhem and has won the Picture of the Day (POTD) on several occasions, something I've been seeking myself. He asked for a few high-resolution headshots, so I sent him a few from my shoot with Julian Vankim. He submitted our image into Model Mayhem's daily contest, but we came in 3rd place - his work is notorious for placing at the top! Thanks, Manny!

Modeling for a Cause

Later this month (March 20th), I'll be participating in my first Team DC Fashion Show with other 12 other models. Team DC is the umbrella organization of the LGBT sports clubs in the Washington, DC region. Each year they sponsor a Fashion Show and Model Search to benefit their Team DC College Scholarship Program which is given annually to LGBT student-athletes graduating from high school. And since I play tennis for CTA (under the Team DC organization), what better way to blend two of my passions for a charitable cause?

But this is also a competition! Models will be judged on their ability to show off the clothing, how well they work the crowd during the Auction (not the Auction item amount since some items will be more costly than others), and crowd response. Clothing lines include selections from Cha Cha Boy, the Leather Rack, Universal Gear, Fireboy, Caramel and Skiviez.

There will also be an online voting portion of the show leading up to the competition on March 20, which will account for 25% of a model's overall score. You can vote daily so stop by and vote for your favorite. The model with the highest overall score wins $500 cash, a free professional photoshoot with Robert Mercer photography, and becomes an automatic finalist to be considered for the 2011 Ripped Genes calendar.

Sexing it Up with Tony Veloz

In an attempt to surpass the first shoot I did with Tony (the Stone Series slideshow), he and I had been planning weeks in advance for a follow-up. We exchanged lengthy emails almost daily, sharing our inspirations on photographs we'd come across and brainstorming on how we would "sex" it up and make our next endeavor an edgier one. I'm confident that our efforts have paid off.

In our shoot, Tony was inspired by my passion for tennis and some raw images of Rick Day, which if you know his work at all you know that it pushes the boundaries of sexy male photography (his work is truly amazing)! Some consider his work pornographic, but Tony and I both see an artful side and felt inspired. My hoodie shot and the green jacket shot below came from that line of thought, while the tennis series explores a more original and colorful side, looking to put a sexier spin on tennis but with a fun and welcoming touch with Tony's signature style.

I've managed to combine the photo we used as inspiration with the finished one(s) as a means of comparing the two. Although not entirely the same, I like to think we met our expectations. Note the Rick Day-inspired shot...I think we nailed that one! :)

My Facebook Saga Concludes

So after weeks of unanswered emails trying to figure out why my original Facebook account was disabled, I received an email from The Facebook Team, stating that they have removed content (photos) which violated the Terms of Use and Statement of Rights and after reviewing my situation have re-enabled my account. It appears that nothing has changed and pictures I felt were pulled mistakenly have not been removed either. Needless to say, I'm hoping the drama with Facebook has come to an end, but it's been quite a saga to get my original account up and running. It helps to have friends who know people and who support you along the way (thanks, SS).

I will probably phase out my other Facebook account which I created after my original was suspended, but for now I will keep both so that I don't miss out on any networking opportunities I may have initiated. I'll be directing folks accordingly. Oh, and refer to my "Lurking in the Grass" post below because I've been quite aggressive with my privacy settings, allowing only supporters of my modeling progress and career to view my portfolio and other albums and posts. I will be monitoring those lurking snakes like a hawk!

KISS the Runway - Fashion Show

This past Saturday (Feb. 13) I participated in Baltimore's KISS the Runway Fashion Show as a runway model. Sponsored by Coors Light and DTLR, the event consisted of dozens of male and female models, fashion designers, a 50-foot runway platform, and special guest Diva Davanna, the 10-year old runway sensation seen on America's Next Top Model and the Tyra Banks Show (From New Jersey). It wasn't my first experience doing runway, but this was by far the most ellaborate and higher end shows I've done. I had been preparing for this event for a couple of months by traveling to Baltimore for auditions and fittings and maintaining my strict diet and workout regimen in case I had to bare my body for the runway.

The show started at 6pm, but the male models had to show up at 2pm for fittings, makeup, and anything else the coordinators needed. I met some really fun people and reconnected with others, so the 4-hour wait was somewhat bearable. However, because we were all told to stay close by, I was unable to grab a substantial lunch or dinner until after the show, which wrapped around 9pm. Life of a model I guess! =)

The most notable moment of the show occurred at the very end, with Kantankerous Couture's lineup. I had modeled two other designers' clothing line with ease, but I knew I had to really WERQ it for the finale. Jonthan Winkles, the man behind Kantankerous Couture, made 3 flashy outfits for me to model so I knew the challenge I was facing to rush back and prepare for the subsequent ones.

The first two walks of the finale were great, but I had to sprint back and put on my silver gogo boy outfit (the finale), including the 10lb. hooker boots (it's always the shoes causing drama)! I went as fast as I could - they were shouting for models! I got the silver top and shorts on just fine, tied the boot laces the best I could with the help of Jonathan and another model, and made it out on the runway JUST in time. I had nailed it...! =)

So in the end I had a blast, endured some stressful situations, and partied on the town with my favorite desginer. It was a lovely welcome to Valentine's Day! KISS.............xoxoxo

Photoshoot - Julian Vankim

The snowmeggeddon that struck the surrounding areas of DC couldn't keep me from venturing out to Chantilly, VA for a photoshoot with an upcoming photographer, Julian Vankim. I won't reveal his age, but this young guy has a bright future ahead of him if he maintains his enthusiasm and passion. He has a lot of great skills and techniques (especially with lighting), and luckily he had a great subject to work with earlier this afternoon! =)

I see potential in him so I decided to spend my Friday afternoon at his studio. He's already been churning out photos, tagging me on Facebook, and continues with the post-editing process on the others. We took over 800 shots, so he'll be pretty busy. Here is one I received already that I really like. Thanks, Julian!

I've been receiving images throughout the weekend, so I thought I would share some of my favorites from last Friday's shoot. I'll be receiving a few more that aren't Facebook-worthy, which means they could receive the "M" rating (mature) from Model Mayhem, so be sure to check back to see if they make their public debut here (and they have).

Tony Veloz in Sapna Magazine!

Reunited with Jimy Kosmakos/Y.M.I.J

I ended up venturing out in the 20+ inches of snow that fell on DC this weekend for an ad hoc shoot with my good buddy Jimy Kosmakos/Y.M.I.J. We spent most of the time just hanging out and talking about the modeling/photography industry than actually shooting, but it was a fun evening. Any time spent with Jimy is guaranteed to be eventful and enjoyable in some way or another.

In the end, I think we turned out some cool images. I'm only expecting a couple pictures back (maybe one more he said), and I got two of them back today. This guy is quick. One is soft, natural, and very simplistic. The other is on the opposite end of the spectrum which we called "Dirtyboy," a more dark and dirty portrayal that he envisioned. They're both great additions to my portfolio!

I received the 3rd image from Monday's photoshoot. It's so cute and charming! Jimy caught me smiling so naturally and he captured it in this awesome B&W photo. This completes our 2nd successful collaboration and have already begun looking ahead to our 3rd - a couples shoot! Yeah, this one should be quite exciting and fun!

Paul Reitz - NYC Photographer

So this Wednesday I'm meeting with Paul Reitz, a NY-based photographer whose portfolio is most impressive! He's enjoyed success in Ohlala magazine many times, so you can imagine how thrilled I am! He's going to be in DC for business and has asked me to have coffee with him on Wednesday. I hope to have a phototshoot scheduled with him after our discussion!

Wow, I'm blogging now! Okay, just a little heads up of what you should expect to read. I'm attempting to document my modeling experiences on a regular, on-going basis. And I'm talking DETAILS! From inspirations I come across, conversations with other models or photographers, and anything under the sun that would encourage or motivate other male models to advance their passions into a rewarding passion and/or career. I've titled my blog, "Hewolf" after the name of my professional portofolio that contains my modeling work.
